*Power, Privilege, & Indifference

I ask myself, why wasn’t I surprised by the words of Jon Gruden, who was the head coach for the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders. Words of racial overtones, homophobia, and misogyny should have no place in our modern society but it’s sad to say that they do.

It reminds me of the old saying. The more things seem to change, the more things remain the same. Some may not want to face this reality but America was founded on White Supremacy. And within this system, race, gender, sexual orientation, and disability status played a part in its hierarchy. Those who were white, male, heterosexual, and non disabled were considered to be the most superior. White women were considered to be unequal and right below this status, and all other non whites were even farther below.

Nevertheless, Jon Grudens emails seemed to hit every demographic and followed those same narratives as he talked about and thought lesser of gay people, women in the NFL workplace, and his black colleagues.

However, a 250 word blog is not enough of a space for me to really address this issue. I hope these words can create a dialogue so we can better understand each other, respect and love each other, and work together as a human family. We were all put on this planet for a reason. We must utilize the gifts and talents that we all possess and use it to benefit the whole. We must see ourselves in others and want for them what we want for ourselves.
