During the covid-19 pandemic i started looking into how i could write someone who is incarcerated. I looked through a ton of folks penpal profiles, and that’s when i saw Glen! Glen is at a prison in the upper peninsula and has quite a few years left on his sentence. He is so kind, and we have became really great friends. This year i had a miscarriage, and my father died, and Glen really supported me through our emails. He is so kind and an amazing friend. He has a 13 year old daughter, he loves to read, and he can’t wait to be released so he can become a long haul trucker. Right after my father died in late october, Glen had told me there was a covid outbreak at his prison. Within days, he was infected. Luckily, his case is mild. But, for his aches, pains, exhaustion, there is nothing offered to keep him more comfortable to heal properly. There isn’t even tylenol or motrin to take for his fever and body aches. My poor friend Glen is just stuck in his bunk, day in and day out, sick with covid. I worry for him so much because if it’s going thru the entire prison what if he gets it again? What if it progresses into something more serious? I don’t want to lose my friend to this virus. I make sure he has money in his trust to call his daughter and get some multivitamins, but that’s all that is offered for him while he’s sick. Glen, and people like Glen deserve so much better. My friend has done multiple years of his sentence already, and has had excellent behavior and really turned his life around. Why should he be forced to be incredibly ill in prison and still have more years to go? how is that fair?
